“Why are ye fearful …”
Matthew 8:23-27
It had been a long trip and our young family was tired and ready for bed. My wife and I had driven a long way that day to begin a vacation with her brother and his wife. In the past three months babes had been born to both of our families and we were eager to get to know the little ones. As everyone went to bed my wife’s brother and his wife were sleeping in their bed room. We took the pull out bed in the living room and the babies were in the two cribs in the nursery at the other end of the house. Being very tired my wife fell asleep very quickly. I had a harder time falling asleep and was lying awake when I heard a small cry from the baby’s room. There was no movement in the other side of the bed I was in but very soon I heard movement from my sister-in-law. She went back to take care of her baby. She soon returned to bed and all was quiet in the house. Quiet at least for a few minutes. It wasn’t long until I heard another small cry from the nursery. My wife was up and moving before the sound had died out. As she returned to bed I thought how remarkable it was that the Lord had placed in the heart of each mother a sensitivity to the sound of their own child’s voice. The cry of her child had awakened and caused each mom to care for her child.
In Mark chapter 8 our Lord had led His disciples to take a boat across the Sea of Galilee. Being tired from His ministry that day He quickly fell asleep in the back of the boat as the disciples sailed the boat across the lake. Soon a strong storm began to blow. The disciples were very frightened as the water began to fill the bottom of the boat. In fear and near panic they awoke the Lord. He saw their fear and rebuked the storm till all was clam. The disciples had been frightened by a storm but that did not bother the Savior. He is the Lord of the sky and sea. It held no fear for Him. Yet, the cry of His children roused Him from His sleep to calm his disciple’s fears.
We are often frightened by the trials we face here in this life. Be assured, child of God, He has heard the sound of your cry in prayer. To you He says:
“Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith.”
